Live Action Movie Set Surveys: Starship Troopers
The benefits of Cyrax for mapping and modeling movie sets are compelling. Cyrax was used to create high resolution 3D digitization and modeling of a movie set comprised of large caves used in Starship Troopers.

For Starship Troopers accurate recreation of caves in 3D digital form was needed to allow the special effects team to mix actors' motions in the caves with digital alien creatures. Original plans called for capturing the detailed geometry of the caves using close range photogrammetric techniques. However, schedule and cost concerns prompted Tippett Studios and their surveying subcontractor Hammon, Jensen, Wallen and Assoc. Inc. (HJW) to look for alternatives. HJW was able to use Cyrax to measure approximately 120,000 points in just two days. These points were integrated with 1,000 points that HJW collected by other methods. Using Cyrax, HJW slashed overall costs and schedule by 80% compared with using photogrammetry.

The location of the trusses and joints made them virtually inaccessible for traditional manual measuring methods. Even electronic total station measuring techniques were not feasible, as there was no reasonable way to attach EDM 'reflecting targets' to the bolts. Cyrax's reflectorless, remote scanning capability was able to overcome these problems and generate useful results.

All of Cyrax scanning was done from one setup on a balcony part way up the domed section of the hall. The unit was rotated and angled from this single setup to perform four different scans.

Another Cyrax advantage was that its use did not interfere with the ongoing construction work at the site. In addition to the practical benefit of using Cyrax, the City of San Francisco was interested in storing all information collected for potential future use.
